The post-corona time on the ATP tour basically got off to an excellent start for Milos Raonic: The Canadian played his way to the final in New York / Cincinnati with a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, losing to Novak Djokovic there. At the immediately following US Open things didn't go so well for Raonic, he lost to compatriot Vasek Pospisil in round two.
In Roland Garros, Raonic did not appear at all, at the moment he is engaged in the ATP Tour 500 tournament there in St. Petersburg. And after his first-round success against the American JJ Wolf, he gave a kind of inventory of the medium-term prospects on the ATP tour.
Rublev and Khachanov continued in St. Petersburg
The bottom line: A return to normality, namely professional tennis in front of full grandstands, is still a long way off. And that won't change in the coming months either. As if to prove it, the message came from Cologne on Tuesday afternoon that three would be played without spectators from the day of the tournament. The city administration had set the limit to 250 fans, but that would have resulted in more costs than benefits.
There are a few people in the stands in St. Petersburg. And they could look forward to the victories of the local favorites: Andrey Rublev defeated Vasek Pospisil in two sets as did Karen Khachanov against the Australian James Duckworth. Defending champion and tournament favorite Daniil Medvedev will only intervene in the action on Wednesday.
