It's that quick: Barely a week ago, Patrick Mouratoglou gave the all-clear , even though disappointment about Serena Williams' third-round loss against Qiang Wang at the Australian Open was great. There was no need to worry, the French coach told TV broadcaster FOX Asia at the time.
A few days later, it sounds very different, almost alarming. "We have to accept the fact that it doesn't work that way," Mouratoglou said in an interview with the BBC. But in no way questioned himself as a trainer. “Maybe we should come back with a slightly different approach, with a different strategy and also with other goals that Serena can achieve. We have to deal with reality, but Serena is confident that she can do it. Otherwise she would no longer be on a tennis court. "
Serena has created opportunities
The 38-year-old has been pursuing her big goal of winning the 24th major title since she returned from her baby break. Serena was close to equalizing with Margaret Court on four occasions, but twice lost to the US Open with Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu novices, twice went broke in Wimbledon's final against experienced professionals in Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep.
“It is difficult to say how many chances she will get. I don't know how long Serena is going to play, but reaching four Grand Slam finals says a lot about her level. This level is good. But we need to understand what exactly is going on and why she is unable to win a major. There is a big difference between reaching a final and winning it. ”
