Naomi Osaka is annoyed by sexist statements from the Olympic boss

Before the start of the Australian Open, Naomi Osaka once again demonstrated that she does not shy away from taking a clear position in public on political issues. The three-time Grand Slam winner criticized Yoshiro Mori, chairman of the organizing committee for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, for his derogatory statements about women who made waves in Osaka's homeland.

The former Japanese prime minister has spoken in the past few days that women always have the habit of talking too long and too much. That is why meetings with women would take particularly long. Mori later apologized for his comments, but the 83-year-old resisted requests to resign. Women are severely underrepresented in Japan's politics and boardrooms.

"I've seen his statements and I don't think they were good," said Osaka. "When you're in that position, you really should think before you speak. I'm not sure what situation he said that in, but it sounds very thoughtless and ignorant."

With Osaka, the organizers in Tokyo are promoting the summer games, which have been postponed by a year. There she will compete for Japan. In the past, Osaka was particularly committed to the Black Lives Matter movement in the USA, but also in Japan. She has also received several awards for her active role.

"If someone makes such comments, they should know exactly what they are triggering," said Osaka of Mori.

Osaka starts the Australian Open on Monday with a match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
