Osaka used their platform at the Grand Slam tournament in early September to draw attention to the racist conditions in the USA. Before each match she wore a mask with the names of black victims of police violence on it. The 22-year-old won the tournament, securing her third Grand Slam title.

She previously planned to boycott the Western & Southern Open preparatory tournament after Jacob Blake was shot multiple times by police officers in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Basketball player Maya Moore praised Osaka's commitment for TIME . "She inspired me with the way she took her athletic dominance into a different narrative," wrote Moore. "It wasn't easy. It took the greatest concentration, courage and will."

And further: "She reminded us not to look for excuses. Whatever power we have, the most sustainable way to use it is to encourage others. Especially those who may not be like us. We need each other. We need the wholeness of humanity. Sport can convey this truth to us in a unique way. "

Naomi Osaka, who is only 22 years old, is currently number three in the world. She has to skip the French Open due to a thigh injury.
