The Next Gen ATP Finals start in Milan on Tuesday

At the latest after the match point was used in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy, it was clear: Holger Rune will not play in the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. Not only did the Dane move into the top 10 of the men's world rankings with his title win, he is also the first substitute for the ATP Finals in Turin, which will take place next week.

The clear favorite for the unofficial U21 World Cup withdrew shortly before the start of the tournament and thus reshuffled the cards in Lombardy. The 21-year-old Italian Matteo Arnaldi, registered at position 134, will replace him. He also takes Rune's place in the green group, which appears to be the much simpler one on paper.

Four premieres on the first matchday

The day session on Tuesday will be opened by fifth-placed Czech Jiri Lehecka against eighth-placed local hero Francesco Passaro. There have not yet been any duels between the two, but Lehcka is clearly 45 places ahead of the man from Sanremo in the ranking. After that, not before 3:00 p.m., the current tournament favorite Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 23) gets to work. The two-time title winner in the current season (Hamburg, Naples) also meets the 21-year-old Taiwanese Chun-Hsin Tseng for the first time, who was able to win two Challenger victories in 2022.

Substitute Arnaldi then comes into play in the night session from 7:30 p.m. He has to take on US boy Brandon Nakashima. The 21-year-old from San Diego also took part in the Next Gen ATP Finals last year and lost there in five sets in the semifinals against compatriot Sebastian Korda. Jack Draper from Great Britain, in third place, and seventh-seeded Dominic Sticker from Switzerland concluded the first day of play. The two 20-year-olds have not met at ATP Tour level either.

Here the tableau from Milan.
