These are "wrong and completely unfounded," says a letter from his lawyers. Video material available to the court dealing with the matter "completely" relieves the 28-year-old. An acquittal is therefore expected.

It had previously become known that the public prosecutor's office in the capital Tbilisi accuses the Hamburg winner of 2019 of "having used violence against a family member in the presence of a minor". If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.

Basilashvili's ex-wife told Mtavari on Sunday that the suspect "physically assaulted" her in the presence of her five-year-old son on Friday. Basilashvili was then arrested. He was released for a deposit of 27,500 euros.

His lawyers now said he was "deeply saddened by the false allegations and torture he has been through in the past few days." He would prove his innocence.
