There are stories that only sport can write. Most of these are about miraculous comebacks such as Rafael Nadal in 2013 or Roger Federer four years later. However, there are those stories that have to deal with tragic crashes of former greats.

Well, Jack Sock - with all due respect - probably never became an all-time-size even with a slightly happier career. But the rapid fall of the American is likely to be as unique as it is dramatic.

Review: Exactly two years ago, Jack Sock won his ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy his biggest single title to date and qualified for the ATP Finals in London, where the now 27-year-old even reached the semi-finals reached and only just missed the eventual winner Grigor Dimitrov.

2018 Wimbledon winner

The year 2018 was also extremely enjoyable for Sock, at least in the doubles, on the side of Mike Bryan, he was able to triumph at Wimbledon and at the annual finals in London. In the individual, however, the engine stalled already properly, throughout the year, the Americans drove only nine wins.

But it should get worse. At the beginning of 2019, Sock tore two ribbons on his right hand's thumb - followed by a six-month compulsory break. In July, the former world ranking night returned to the ATP Tour, but without being in full possession of his forces.

There were defeats against no-names like Jack Draper, Alex Bolt and Mikhail Pervolarakis. The only bright spot was the victory against Fabio Fognini at the Laver Cup in Geneva, for the Sock but no world ranking points got.

Last Tour victory exactly one year ago

Otherwise, the 27-year-old could not score a single victory in the entire season. The latest success dates from last year's edition of the ATP 1000 Paris-Bercy event against Malek Jaziri. This year, Sock could not compete in the French capital due to his poor ranking (253), instead, the Americans played at the Challenger tournament in Charlottesville.

There Sock had to give up this week against American Sekou Bangoura, however, because of back problems. Thus, the former top ten player has been without a single victory for a year and will therefore no longer appear in the ATP world ranking list next week.

Sock is still in 37th place in the Doubles World Ranking. Whether the Americans will advance to the top of the ranking in the singles category in 2020 is currently still in the stars. It would be another story that only sport can write.
