No Medvedev in London - Was the "Lex Wimbledon" also at the Laver Cup?

The overarching idea of the Laver Cup is as follows: the best European players should meet the best in the rest of the tennis world. And the benchmark for this is the ATP world rankings. Now this mechanism for the edition in London was overridden by the fact that Andy Murray was awarded a starting place in Björn Borg's team very early on. And even Roger Federer's ranking, who no longer had one, did not allow for an appearance in the O2 Arena.

But at the time the teams were announced, Daniil Medvedev would have been a safe bet for Europe. Especially since the Russian was not guilty of anything in Boston last year. But Medvedev was not invited. Why? The assumption is obvious: because the British government had something against it. Just like at the tournament in Wimbledon.

Rublev knows of an invitation to Medvedev

The managers of the All England Lawn Tennis Club invited the professionals from Russia and Belarus from the traditional event, probably under political pressure because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The ATP and WTA retaliated by not awarding world ranking points for the exploits at Wimbledon.

Now Andrey Rublev has given new fuel to the assumption on social media that Daniil Medvedev was intended for a place in the European team. But that the prospect of coming into conflict with British politics was too great. Why the 2021 US Open champion took a break during Laver Cup week.
