Novak Djokovic defied all odds in Melbourne

By the second week of the Australian Open at the latest, Novak Djokovic was no longer showing signs of his thigh injury. In the first rounds the Serb was still visibly struggling, before the start of the tournament there was even a cancellation by the Serbian superstar. According to Djokovic coach Goran Ivanisevic, 97 percent of all players would not have even started after receiving the diagnosis.

The exact diagnosis is not yet known. But that is apparently about to change soon. As Djokovic announced after the end of the tournament, he would reveal details about his injury in the coming days. "These two weeks I thought about whether I should publish something about the injury and I said to myself that I will do it because I want to do it," explained the 22-time Grand Slam champion.

Djokovic goes on the offensive

Given his grandiose performances in Melbourne, critics expressed doubts about the seriousness of the injury. Djokovic had already denounced this during the course of the tournament and is now going on the offensive: "I will go into more detail and publish some photos on social media of everything we have experienced."

Two years ago, Djokovic tore his abdominal muscle at the Australian Open - and still won the tournament afterwards. Even then there were already doubts, according to the Serb. "I feel the need to show and prove certain things. Not so much for these people but for me - some comments bother me a little."

Djokovic leaves return open

It is not yet clear when Djokovic will return to the tour. He is currently registered for the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai (February 27 to March 4). "I hope to be back on the pitch in a few weeks," said the world number one.

According to the current status, Djokovic is not allowed to compete in the subsequent ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. Vaccination against the corona virus is still mandatory for entry into the USA. The unvaccinated 35-year-old had already missed the "Sunshine Double" last year.
