Carlos Alcaraz with the most important trophy of his young career

With Rafael Nadal's departure from the ATP Finals in Turin yesterday, Carlos Alcaraz can sit back and relax. Because now it's official: The 19-year-old Spaniard closes the year as the best in his class. A remarkable performance by Alcaraz, who has won five titles this year: first the 500 in Rio de Janeiro, then the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, later in Barcelona and Madrid and finally, to top it off, the US Open .

With all the other formidable results, this results in a total of 6,820 points.

Which is surprisingly little: at the end of 2021 there were 11,540 points on the plus side, and Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev also had more points a year ago than Alcaraz today. It would have made little difference for the Spaniard if ATP points had been awarded in Wimbledon. Alcaraz reached the round of 16 on Church Road, which would have been worth 180 points.

Djokovic is missing a lot of points

Things are a little different with Novak Djokovic: he would have taken 2,000 points from London. And was not allowed to compete in the majors in Australia and the US. That's another 4,000 points that Djokovic could definitely be expected to do. As well as deep runs at the 1000s events in Indian Wells, Miami, Canada and Cincinnati. It looks like the unvaccinated man from Belgrade will have these options open again next season.

Then Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently missing the ATP Finals in Turin due to an abdominal muscle injury, will be the hunted. If Alcaraz wants to keep his top position, then he has to play even more successfully than in this already strong season.

Here are the world ranking first at the end of the year with their points since 2010:
