The first chance for a medal is gone: Alexander Zverev was eliminated in doubles with Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarter-finals of the Olympic tennis tournament in Tokyo. The duo from Hamburg and Warstein lost to the Americans Austin Krajicek / Tennys Sandgren 3: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7). Zverev had previously made it into the round of the last eight in the individual, and he will continue there on Thursday.

The favorites Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic advanced to the semi-finals with a clear win against Ben McLachlan and Kei Nishikori. Andy Murray's next Olympic medal will not go anywhere: The individual winner of London and Rio de Janeiro lost with Joe Salisbury against Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig in the match tiebreaker. New Zealanders Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell were the fourth couple to qualify for the semifinals. They defeated the Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah also in the match tiebreak.

The last German medal winners in men's doubles remain Rainer Schüttler, who is a trainer in Tokyo, and Nicolas Kiefer, who won silver in Athens in 2004. Marc Goellner and David Prinosil with bronze in Atlanta in 1996 and the Wimbledon winners Boris Becker and Michael Stich with gold in 1992 in Barcelona are also on the success lists of the Olympic doubles competitions.
