Rafael Nadal has his sights set on the US Open

The dream of the Grand Slam came to an abrupt end for Rafael Nadal due to an abdominal muscle injury sustained at Wimbledon, but the year 2022 could still be one of the best of his career for the Spaniard. Not that after the triumphs at the Australian Open and French Open there was still a need for an increase.

And yet it can be assumed that Nadal always has the US Open, which begins on August 29, in the back of his mind during his current training sessions. After all, the 36-year-old could extend his lead over Novak Djokovic in the all-time Grand Slam leaderboard to two titles with a win in New York.

Djokovic probably not at the US Open

The chances of Nadal's fifth tournament victory in the Big Apple appear to be intact, as Djokovic threatens to miss the last Grand Slam tournament of the year due to his lack of COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, the third in the world rankings hit the ground again for the first time in training on Thursday, so the abdominal muscle injury should finally be a thing of the past.

However, nothing should stand in the way of participating in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, the hard court event starts on August 7th. And is one of Nadal's favorite tournaments on the tour: In Canada, the Mallorcan has already entered the list of winners five times.
