After Rafael Nadal also had to cancel the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome on Friday, the 22-time Grand Slam champion is gradually running out of time before the French Open begins. Because starting May 28th, the French capital will be fighting for the second major trophy of the year.

In the past, there was usually no way around Nadal at the Bois de Boulogne. The Spaniard triumphed an incredible 14 times at the French Open, and last year there was no herb against the long-standing world number one in Paris. In 2023, the signs for Nadal are probably worse than ever.

Nadal has an acute lack of match practice due to his long-term injury to his hip flexor: the 36-year-old has not played a match on the tour since the Australian Open. To make matters worse, the Mallorquin in Paris as the current world number 14. a difficult draw is imminent as early as the round of sixteen.

Nadal's relapse in the world rankings was still limited. If the Iberian fails early at the French Open or doesn't even start at all, he is at risk of a massive crash. If you subtract the 2,000 points from his triumph last year, Nadal only has 535 points. With that, he wouldn't even officially be one of the top 100 players in the world.
