Rafael Nadal plans to start in Monte Carlo

The past fourteen months could hardly have been a bigger roller coaster ride for Rafael Nadal. Despite all the odds, the Spaniard had sensationally won the title at the Australian Open last year and months later he was able to win the 22nd major title at his Grand Slam, the French Open, which resulted in an injury break for the Mallorcan the other. And that should hardly change in 2023 either.

An injury that was supposed to seal the surprising second round against a strong Mackenzie McDonald has been bothering Nadal ever since. Acapulco, Indian Wells, Miami - the first big highlights of the season, they all took place without the Spaniard being present. So while the Sunshine Double is fighting for a total of 2000 world ranking points, the 36-year-old is working on his recent comeback on the ATP tour.

Nadal - serial winner in Monte Carlo

If everything goes according to plan, this should take place at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo. At least that's what tournament director David Massey suggests: "Rafa was the first registered player. He really wants to play in the Monte Carlo Masters and takes every opportunity to take part in the tournament he loves so much," the tournament director is quoted as saying in a broadcast . The event is scheduled to take place in just over three weeks from April 9th to 16th.

Most recently, the Spaniard has been showing himself more on social media during training - a generally good sign for the 22-time Grand Slam champion to return soon. The Mallorcan only has positive memories of Monte Carlo, and Nadal won the tournament in the principality eleven times in total. More often than any other player. In 2023, however, the 36-year-old will probably primarily be about getting a few matches on a competitive level going. When Nadal starts.
