What are the biggest matches from 2010 to 2019 - a question that many have been considering recently. Among others, the American Tennis Magazine in the person of Steve Tignor, who put the Wimbledon final of this year between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at the top - and received some criticism for it.
Now the maestro himself has spoken in conversation with the Swiss daily Anzeiger - and confessed that he lacks a precise overview. And Federer gave a very logical reason: "I watch a lot of matches while I am still in the tournament. But when I am eliminated, I hardly watch anymore. That is why I cannot really estimate the finals between Rafa and Novak . "
Federer chooses 2012 Australian Open final as match of the decade
For 2019, Federer primarily remembered the dramatic and high-class round of 16 between Stan Wawrinka and Stefanos Tsitsipas, which "Stan the Man" ultimately won 8: 6 in the decisive fifth set and thus won a quarter-final against Federer (which he won ).
As a match of the decade, Federer still didn't want to let this game go. "The match of the decade should be a final," he mused. And in the end came the epic Australian Open final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, which lasted 5 hours and 53 minutes and the Djokovic ended 5: 7, 6: 4, 6: 2, 6: 7 (5) and 7: 5 won - after Nadal had left a huge chance at 4: 2 to 40:15. "The two fought many big battles," said Federer.
And of course one should not forget Wawrinka's victory in the French Open final against Djokovic. "His Paris final against Novak was crazy too!"
But of course Federer also has two of his matches in mind. "When I think of my matches, two come to mind: the finals in Australia 2017 and Wimbledon this year," said Federer. Two games that could have gone the other way round ...
