Roger Federer will therefore wait longer with his return after his surprisingly clear quarter-final at Wimbledon. The Swiss announced his withdrawal from the ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati due to a knee injury. The 39-year-old has not yet commented on the US Open.

A few other players will also be missing in Toronto. The newly crowned Olympic champion Alexander Zverev had already hinted that after his greatest career success to date, he wanted to skip one or the other tournament. It is now clear: Germany’s number one will not travel to Canada at least once. A few days ago, Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic announced that they would not start at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto.

Zverev relies on relaxation

The exhausting appearances in Tokyo were mainly responsible for the cancellation, Zverev said in a statement. "I regret to inform you that I unfortunately have to withdraw from the National Bank Open in Toronto," said the German. "Because of the intense last few weeks and my incredible experience at the Olympics, I need to recover so that I can hopefully be at my best for the rest of the US summer program."

Matteo Berrettini and the bronze winner from Tokyo, Pablo Carreno Busta, will also not start in Toronto. Local hero Milos Raonic will also be absent from Toronto. A tough decision, as the Canadian said: "I am heartbroken and sad that I have to withdraw from this year's National Bank Open."
