World star Roger Federer has not yet given up hopes of returning to the tennis circuit despite a long injury break. "I hope that I can start the comeback towards the middle or end of the year," said the 20-time Grand Slam winner to "ZDF" on the sidelines of the Alpine Ski World Cup in Lenzerheide. Federer lives with his family in the immediate vicinity in the canton of Graubünden.
It has been a difficult time in the last six months, admitted the longtime number one in the world: "I was on crutches for two months." In the meantime he is "on his feet again. You can see I can move normally again, but I still have to wait a bit before running." He hopes for an increase in the coming months.
Federer has not played a match since his quarter-finals against Hubert Hurkacz from Poland in July 2021 in Wimbledon. In August he had to undergo another operation on his right knee - for the third time since 2020. The operation was the right decision, the 40-year-old emphasized to "SRF": "The operation was the right thing. The knee was after Wimbledon not good anymore. It couldn't go on like this."
After a "very good" magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) a few weeks ago, he could now "slowly think about the comeback". Federer is in no hurry: "It will definitely take a while." A comeback at the end of summer or beginning of autumn is a realistic scenario. Federer thus confirmed the statement of his coach Severin Lüthi that the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon was probably a little too early for him .
