Tennis superstar Roger Federer redeemed 3.98 million euros for a good cause with old rackets and playing clothing. "Sales were more than three times the lower estimate," said Christie's auction house. The money goes to the 39-year-old's foundation, which is committed to educational projects for children in southern Africa and in Federer's Swiss homeland.

"The prices achieved are unbelievable," said Federer: "We started collecting the items that came with us because we thought that maybe one day we could do something useful with them. Mirka (Federer's wife; d. Ed.) And I am honored that the decision we made will make a profound difference for so many children. "

Customers from six continents

The auction of the shorts, polo shirts, rackets and shoes of the 20-time Grand Slam champion took place in two parts: a live sale on June 23 in London and an online sale from June 23 to July 14. The customers were spread over 44 countries and six continents.

The three rackets that Federer used at the 2019 Wimbledon tournament brought in the most. They found a new owner in the package for around 190,000 euros.
