A few days ago, Sergej Stachowski told AFP that Roger Federer had contacted him and said he wanted to support children in Ukraine with his Roger Federer Foundation. Now the 40-year-old has made this support public. "My family and I are dismayed to see the images from Ukraine and our hearts are broken for the innocent people who are deeply affected. We stand for peace," reads a tweet.
With the support one would like to primarily help the children from the war. "We will provide support to children from Ukraine - around 6 million Ukrainian children are currently out of school and we know it is an extremely important time to provide access to education and we want to support them in dealing with this extremely traumatic experience to deal with," Federer wrote in a statement.
With the help of the Roger Federer Foundation, which the 20-time Grand Slam winner runs together with his wife Mirka, the Swiss will therefore provide 500,000 US dollars to provide access to secondary school education for Ukrainian children," said Federer.
