Roger Federer wants to distribute prize money better

Upon returning to the ATP player board, Roger Federer wants to campaign for more prize money for poorly placed tennis professionals. "I think it was important first of all that we managed to raise the win premiums," said Federer during the US Open in New York.

After this was achieved faster than expected, all professionals should now benefit from it. "I think the players on the Challenger Tour and also players who qualify for the main field or the second round should get more," said Federer.

These players would work just as hard and sacrifice as much time as the top stars, said the record-breaking Grand Slam tournament winner from Switzerland. "It would be nice if the players could survive in the lower rankings."

Prize money in tennis has skyrocketed in recent years. Many millions are distributed at the four Grand Slam tournaments in Melbourne, Paris, Wimbledon and New York in particular.

The currently running US Open - combined women and men competition - is endowed with a record prize money of the equivalent of 51.64 million euros (57.23 million US dollars). The winners of the men and women will each receive 3.47 million euros (3.85 million US dollars).

Roger Federer at the US Open in 3rd round

Federer has been a member of the ATP Players Council again this summer and can thus influence the development of tennis. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and the now double Austrian Jürgen Melzer also belong to the committee.

Federer reached the third round at the US Open on Wednesday. Just like in his opening match, he had to give up the first set against Damir Dzumhur. "It is difficult to explain. I prepare as before. That was underground today," said the Swiss after the game.
