Sascha Bajin defends Dayana Yastremska: "Some people should shut up"

Caroline Wozniacki extended her career on Wednesday after a strong performance. The Danish, who wants to end her career after the Australian Open, won 7-5, 7-5 against Dayana Yastremska. The Ukrainian noticed a questionable action, but her trainer Sascha Bajin then defended her with clear words.

Wozniacki led the game 7: 5 and 5: 4 before Yastremska asked the physiotherapist. She was treated on the thigh, but the time of the treatment break made for conversation.

Yastremska fended off three match balls in the following game and equalized after losing a 3-0 lead. A few minutes later, Wozniacki made the decisive break to 7: 5.

"She was obviously trying to disrupt my rhythm," said Wozniacki, who won four of the previous five games before taking a medical break. "At 5-4, I don't think anything was wrong. It ran smoothly. It's a trick that it has shown in the past, I knew it would come."

And further: "I wanted to stay focused. I had chances, but I couldn't take them. It was important to make 6: 5, that was a relief."

Sascha Bajin rages against critics

Yastremska is known in the women's dressing room for her tactically chosen time-outs. In the 2019 season, she suffered the wrath of Kiki Bertens or Alja Tomljanovic.

Coach Bajin, who vigorously defended his protégé on Twitter, could not understand the criticism. "Some people should just shut up and end this unnecessary conversation," he raged. "Dayana had had problems with her leg for days, but since you are all doctors and trainers, you know better than she and her entire team."

Bajin has been working with 19-year-old Yastremska since the end of last season. The current number 21 in the world reached the final of Adelaide last week, where it failed due to Ashleigh Barty. Before that, she failed in Brisbane at the start.
