"Have I ever doubted that I would return? Absolutely, for sure," said the 40-year-old after winning her opening doubles match alongside Tunisian Ons Jabeur at the WTA lawn tournament in Eastbourne, England. Now, however, Williams said her body "feels great."

After a forced break of 357 days, Williams and her partner defeated Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals. A tear in the hamstrings had forced Williams into a month-long hiatus. At the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon next week, she will be a wildcard. She has won the tournament in south-west London seven times, most recently in 2016.

However, Williams was unable to predict how long she would like to remain on the court. "I literally take one day at a time. I really took my time with my hamstring injury, so I don't make many decisions afterwards," said the 23-time Grand Slam winner. Her last major title, however, dates back to 2017 when she won the Australian Open.
