The 23-time Grand Slam winner lost to American Shelby Rogers 6: 1, 4: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7) in the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. Rogers is ranked 116th in the world.

"It's every child's dream to create something like this," said Rogers. "It's a strange circumstance, it's a strange situation. But a victory is a victory." Williams (38), who had defeated her two-year-old sister Venus in the round of 16 , played her first tournament after a six-month forced Corona break.

Williams last lost to a player outside the top 100 at the 2012 French Open when she lost to French Virginie Razzano in the first round.

In the semifinals, Rogers meets the Swiss Jil Teichmann, who beat CiCi Bellis 6: 2, 6: 4. Also in the last four are Jennifer Brady and Cori Gauff. Brady defeated Marie Bouzkova 6: 1, 6: 2, Gauff won against Ons Jabeur with 4: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 1.
