Anyone who has observed the combined major event in the Caja Magica in recent years will always catch a block on Manuel Santana. The legendary Spaniard had handed over his agendas as tournament director to Feliciano Lopez, but there was always time for “Manolo” to visit the biggest clay court event after the French Open.
In Roland Garros, Santana celebrated great successes in the 1960s: in 1961 and 1964 he won his first two majors in singles there, followed by triumph at the US Open in 1965, and a year later also victory on the sacred lawn of Wimbledon. At the French Open, Santana managed the doubles competition with Roy Emerson.
Between 1958 and 1973 Santana played no less than 120 singles and doubles matches for the Spanish Davis Cup team, winning 92 of them. Later he was also the captain of the national team.
Today it became known that Manuel Santana has died at the age of 83.
