"I made a successful comeback in 2019, but after Wimbledon I had shoulder problems again," Darcis said of his retirement from tennis. "I am no longer at my best level mentally and physically," the Belgian continued.

In the meantime, the 35-year-old has dropped back to 178th place. In particular, the Belgian could never really recover from the elbow problems in 2018 after the extremely successful season 2017, in which Darcis had reached his career high at position 38.

Victory against Nadal at Wimbledon

Nevertheless, the veteran looks back on his career with pride: "Many strong moments in my career will be remembered forever." As a highlight, the victory over Rafael Nadal in the first round of Wimbledon in 2013 can be cited.

At his home tournament in Antwerp, the Belgian will serve on home soil for the last time. "I hope that I can end the year well. That also applies to my last event here in Antwerp," said Darcis. The 35-year-old competes in both the singles and doubles competition thanks to a wildcard.
