The WTA wants to get started at the beginning of January

For women, the tennis year could start earlier than expected. This is what WTA boss Steve Simon indicated in an interview.

For a long time no one has heard from the WTA and its representatives, now Steve Simon is on the offensive. What is also urgently needed: After the French Open 2020, only two women’s tournaments took place: in Ostrava and Linz. But in the coming season it should start well before the Australian Open, which is currently scheduled to start on February 8, 2021. Including the not insignificant restriction that all players must be in quarantine for 14 days after entering Australia.

The WTA plans, however, that the season start takes place outside of Australia. "At the moment we hope to be able to announce a few events for the week from January 4, 2021 in about a week," said Simon at the Reuters agency.

One of the very early tournaments, the one in Auckland / New Zealand, threw in the towel a long time ago. One can only speculate about which locations are possible alternatives. Indoor tournaments, however, seem as good as impossible. Interest could possibly come from the Gulf region. Which would also make the onward journey to Australia easier.

“I think we are nearing a good solution as we start the year. Then to cross over to Australia and have a great year, "concluded Simon.
