Thiem had been hit when he arrived from Kitzbühel - a cold that had reached its climax on Friday. "Yesterday and the day before it was okay, I also went into the matches relatively easily. It worked well. Today it was a bit worse on the pitch. He also played really well," said Thiem, according to an APA report.

The short arrival after the home win in Kitz and the associated jet lag cost additional strength, Thiem continued. "Today I was completely gone." Nevertheless, he did not want to cancel the game, but wanted to try it. But now the eyes are already fully focused on the task ahead. "Now I will see that I will be fully fit again until Cincinnati."

In Cincinnati, Thiem may have an exciting job ahead of it. After a walk-through in round one, he meets the winner of the match between Richard Gasquet and comebacker Andy Murray.

In doubles he is in Cincy with Jan-Lennard Struff at the start.
