Laura Siegemund's task on New Year's Day in Sydney could hardly have been more difficult: Siegemund started her match against Petra Kvitova with a 0-2 deficit for Germany. On the first day of the international match against the Czech Republic, Alexander Zverev and Jule Niemeier lost their games. Kvitova, on the other hand, was already convincing against the USA with a win over Jessica Pegula.

And the two-time Wimbledon winner didn't miss a beat against Laura Siegemund, winning 6: 4 and 6: 2. Kvitova gave the Czech Republic an unassailable lead. Oscar Otte's success against Dalibor Svrcina didn't help either. The Cologne native won 7:6 (1) and 6:2.

Zverev, Niemeier and Co. now have to win against the USA in order to still have a chance of progressing. The German number one then meets Taylor Fritz in the top individual.
