Peter Gojowczyk's impressive run at the US Open is over: The 32-year-old from Munich lost to the 14-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday evening (local time) in a contested round of 16 duel in New York 7: 5, 1: 6, 7: 5, 2: 6, 0: 6.

While Gojowczyk missed his first entry into the top eight at a Grand Slam tournament, Alcaraz continues to cause a stir: the 18-year-old is the youngest quarter-finalist in Flushing Meadows since professional tennis was introduced in 1968.

Zverev and Otte on Monday

Gojowczyk had fought his way into the tournament as a qualifier and then with victories over Ugo Humbert (France / No. 23), Dusan Lajovic (Serbia) and Henri Laaksonen (Switzerland) contributed his part to the fact that for the first time since Wimbledon 1997 three German professionals made it to the round of 16 made it to a major.

On Monday, Germany's number one Alexander Zverev (5 p.m. CEST / Eurosport) and Cologne's Oscar Otte (around 10 p.m.) still have a chance at the quarter-finals against the strong Italians Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
