Dominic Thiem has a lot planned this Monday at the National Tennis Center in New York, as the champion demonstrated when he marched onto Court 17. Despite the sweltering heat, Thiem came in a thick sweater, Carreno Busta only countered with a green T-shirt.

And Thiem started strong and immediately took the lead with a break. And that after "PCB" had led 40:15 on their own serve. But the Spaniard managed to equalize to 4: 4, also with the support of Thiem, who alternated spectacular winning shots with relatively simple mistakes.

Carreno Busta not only used the momentum to win the first set. But to dash away in the second as well. The 6:1 testified to that.

Thiem gets set three late

Hope came for Dominic Thiem in the third set of his eighth encounter with Carreno Busta. The Austrian had won the previous seven, now he led 5:3 and served to win the set. But Thiem let his opponent back into play, and Carreno Busta, who won his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal a few weeks ago, gratefully accepted. A few minutes later, Carreno Busta wobbled and was 15:40 behind in the twelfth game. After 2:33 hours of play, the Spaniard's forehand landed in the net and Dominic Thiem was allowed to clench his fist.

In the fourth set, the shadow fell over Court 17, and there were no objections from either player. Carreno Busta pricked the first needle and took the serve from Thiem to make it 3-2. After 3:16 hours of play, Carreno Busta put a forehand on the line - the Spaniard's first match point. Thiem defended with a one-two punch. At the second chance, Thiem then warped a forehand - and still left the court with his head held high.
