One day after Stefanos Tsitsipas surprisingly lost to Daniel Elahi Galan in round one at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Jannik Sinner, another co-favourite, had major problems in overcoming the opening hurdle. Because Sinner had to go over five sets against Daniel Altmaier, winning 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 1, 3: 6 and 6: 1.
Altmaier knew how to defend himself well from the start in windy conditions, especially with his parry shot, the backhand, he repeatedly caused problems for Sinner. Ultimately, however, the larger arsenal of winning strokes decided the game for the favorite.
