Carlos Alcaraz is in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time - after an outstanding game against Jannik Sinner from both sides. What the two youngsters delivered that late New York night was tennis at the highest, very highest level. With the probably final clarification of the question of whether tennis should continue to be well positioned after the departure of the "Big Four". Yes, friends, it is. /

It was an up and down, and even when Sinner led with another break in the fourth set and wanted to serve, you couldn't be too sure - rightly so, as it turned out. Too much had happened so far: after losing the first round, Sinner had already led 5: 3 in the second set, but then had to accept the rebreak. And at 5: 6 survive a 0:40, fend off a total of five set balls. It would have been the 2-0 lead for Alcaraz. Instead, the Italian came to equalize the set.

Sinner does not use match point in set 4

Alcaraz failed to convert a break lead twice in the third set and lost the tie-break again, this time to zero.

In the fourth set, Sinner got an early break, which he transported to the match point. In which he missed a backhand. A short time later, Alcaraz equalized and pushed again, to great cheers from the New York fans.

In the fifth round, Sinner managed the first break again to make it 3:2, but he couldn't get through a 40:15, Alcaraz managed another rebreak. And at 4: 3 he had the decisive lead, which he achieved this time - after 5 hours and 14 minutes. And at 2.50am local time - it was the latest finish at the US Open ever.

The 21-year-old meets Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals on Friday, who disenchanted Andrey Rublev in the evening.
