Novak Djokovic was there again when it counted

The water level reports in the early Friday evening in New York City did not suggest anything good: Novak Djokovic had postponed his import by the hour. And that after the problems with his shoulder that had plagued the Serb against Juan Ignacio Londero in the second round. Should competing against Denis Kudla be in danger? On the other hand: Shortly before the start of the night session, Marian Vajda and Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic's closer coaching team, were extremely relaxed in the players' café.

With good reason: Novak Djokovic was always there against Kudla when things got tight. Just as you are used to from the industry leader. The American struggled hard, but Djokovic once again gave almost nothing to his opponent. Only a few double mistakes too much were scattered by a man from Belgrade. But Kudla could not use any of his seven breakballs. Djokovic fended off with his serves, but especially again with his legs, which helped him to excellent defensive strikes. After 2:04 hours of play, the favorite prevailed with 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 2.

Djokovic now against Wawrinka

The task in the round of 16 on Sunday will be much more demanding from the paper form. Djokovic leads his upcoming opponent Stan Wawrinka with 19: 5 wins, but the Swiss celebrated three of his successes in Grand Slam tournaments: 2014 at the Australian Open, 2015 in Roland Garros and 2016 at the US Open. Wawrinka also won the titles on all three occasions. The final three years ago in Flushing Meadows was also the recent encounter between Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic.

He played almost painlessly and that was the most important thing, said Djokovic after the match. He took the day off yesterday to spare himself. For his next opponent, the tournament favorite came up with the big matches on the major stage. For Sunday he wishes that the better player wins.
