When the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium are almost full on a Friday lunchtime in the first week, you can confidently count on Roger Federer to go about his work. And the maestro did this for the first time in a convincing manner at the running tournament. Of course, the victories against Sumit Nagal and Damir Dzumhur never had the potential for a surprise, but the loss of the first set had already worried Federer.

The 38-year-old started concentrated against Daniel Evans, only making a small mistake at the beginning of the third set when he allowed the Briton to make a 1: 2 rebreak. But that was also it with gifts, Federer moved safely into the third round with a 6: 2, 6: 2 and 6: 1.

Federer trained with Evans

Evans is a player whose philosophy is very similar to that of Roger Federer: the one-handed backhand works as a slice and a striking blow, variation is also the trump card for the 29-year-old British. The only problem is that Federer has mastered every stroke a little better.

There were no secrets between these two players anyway. As Federer said after his success against Dzumhur, he and Evans had prepared for the clay court season. That did not help the outsider much further: After only 80 minutes of play, Federer used his first match ball.

The places would play much faster under the hot conditions than in the night session or with the roof closed, Federer explained after the match. And added apropos that Michael Stich was responsible for the fact that he had improved as a ball boy. The German Wimbledon champion from 1991 had told young Roger at his home tournament in Basel that his position as a ball boy was not good. Federer learned from this. After all, he also wanted to do this job well.

In the second round he is now expecting David Goffin rather than Pablo Carreno Busta. Both players that Federer likes personally. And who can also count on a full house.
