A double fault was the last point Novak Djokovic played at the 2019 US Open. The defending champion then signaled the chair referee and his opponent Stan Wawrinka that he could not continue playing. At that time, the Swiss had led 6: 4, 7: 5 and 2: 1. After a strong performance, even if Djokovic tried to shorten the points with unusually risky blows.

After Wawrinka got the second act, Djokovic had the physiotherapist come to the court to have his injured left shoulder treated. Three games later, number one had to end the match. The spectators partially acknowledged the Serb's departure with whistles. An end that Djokovic didn't deserve. The 16-time major champion had had shoulder problems in his first matches in New York, especially when he met Juan Ignacio Londero. Djokovic was reluctant to provide information.

What this means for the coming weeks is not yet clear. Following the match, John McEnroe said that he expected Djokovic to take a longer break now, maybe even until the start of the 2020 season.

Stan Wawrinka will meet Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Russian had prevailed against Dominik Köpfer in four sentences. The second quarter-finals in the upper half of the tableau are contested by Roger Federer after a straight victory against David Goffin and Grigor Dimitrov, who also only needed three sets against Alex de Minaur.
