Donna Vekic only needed a few minutes against Patricia Tig to get up to operating temperature. After balanced games at the start of this game, the Croatian turned up and made the class difference in this second round encounter clear. In the end, Vekic won 6: 2 and 6: 1.

In round three, Vekic now meets Tsvetana Pironkova, who surprisingly prevailed against Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard had already led 5: 3 in the first round, but lost it 5: 7. That should be the break of the neck for the two-time Grand Slam winner. Prionkova grabbed set two 6: 3 and is in round three of the US Open.

Jabeur versus Kenin

The Tunisian Ons Jabeur is also in round three. The North African had to fight hard against Estonian Kaia Kanepi, especially in the first set, but won it 10: 8 in the tie-break. This broke the Estonian resistance, Jabeur was overwhelmingly superior in the second round and secured it 6-0. Jabeur will now meet this year's Australian Open winner, Sofia Kenin.

The American was able to prevail in her second round match against the Canadian Leyla Fernandez in two sets. Maria Sakkari, who Serena Williams defeated at the Western & Southern Open last week, is also one round further. The Greek made a cold start against local hero Bernarda Pera and lost the first set. Then Sakkari found her game, with 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2 the Greek is in the third round.
