Dominic Thiem fought, the Lower Austrian continued to develop opportunities despite obvious physical problems - in the end, however, the 25-year-old Lower Austrian had to admit defeat to Thomas Fabbiano. Arthur Ashe Stadium and Dominic Thiem - this combination had never been so early in a US Open tournament as in 2019. But whoever forces Rafael Nadal into a tiebreak in a fifth set like Thiem almost twelve months ago, has got one natural right to multiple appearances at the largest tennis stadium in the world.

Thiem had familiarized himself with the events in the morning before his opponent, coach Nicolas Massu gave the hitting partner. Fabbiano went to Thiem.

Thiem only at a maximum of 80 percent

Physiotherapist Alex Stober sees his protégé again at 80 percent of his maximum performance, the illness that Thiem had finally caught in Cincinnati still leaves its mark. However, the missing percentages quickly become noticeable in the extended world top, especially against a man like Fabbiano, who is well on foot, rarely helps with simple mistakes.

Thiem gave up his serve right at the start of the match and ran after the break unsuccessfully until the end of the first set. After winning the second round, almost the same picture in set three - but this time the favorite worked as a setback chance and chance for a comeback. And still lost the sentence. Afterwards the forces were not enough for a rearing up - Fabbiano got the breaks for 2: 1 and 4: 1. After 2:23 hours of play, the chapter US Open 2019 for Dominic Thiem was over.
