In addition to numerous enjoyable tennis moments, 2022 also had a few handkerchief moments ready. While sensationalist Carlos Alcaraz's first major success and Holger Rune's Masters 1000 success in Paris-Bercy put two absolute superstars of tomorrow in the limelight, two absolute tennis legends, Roger Federer and Serena Willams, finally gave their thanks this year away.

An emotional farewell gala was prepared for the Swiss at the self-made Laver Cup, the younger of the two Williams sisters decided on a "goodbye" on what is possibly the biggest tennis stage ever - the US Open in New York. The 23-time major winner was eliminated after two match successes in the third round against the Australian Alja Tomljanovic in three rounds.

"I love tennis and would like to play again"

On the other hand, the loss of the first round of the older sister Venus caused far fewer flashbulbs. The 42-year-old failed at the start against Belgian Alyson Van Uytvanck 1: 6, 6: 7 (5) and had previously suffered three other defeats on the women's tour. The 2000 Olympic champion in Sydney was not able to win a match last year.

However, anyone who thought that Serena's sister had retired as well could be wrong, because apparently Venus hasn't had enough. In her vlog on YouTube, the American spoke about how much she would like to get back on the court: "Honestly, I've been playing a lot of tennis lately. A lot of people ask me if I'll play again. I love tennis and would love to play again."

However, there don't seem to be any precise plans yet: "I don't know when that could be, but I was really on the pitch a lot. After the doubles game we played at the US Open, I immediately have a place for the next one Booked the day and haven't missed a practice since. I've had a lot of fun and worked on a lot of things including my forehand and my serve, the most important shot in modern tennis."
