Roger Federer wants to return one more time. That's for sure. The Swiss, who as a 40-year-old is more likely to be assigned to the seniors among the active players, underwent another knee operation last year in order to be able to serve on the ATP tour again in the best shape. This should now be realized in 2022, as Federer has promised on several occasions.
Although there has been little concrete information from the Swiss camp so far with regard to the comeback plans, Federer has made it clear in the past few days: The return in the best form is the declared goal. "My experience in Doha showed me that my journey as a top athlete is not over yet," Federer wrote a few days ago as part of his Roger Federer Foundation's annual report. "The progress I am making every day reinforces my belief that I will be healthy and strong enough to return to the tennis court at the highest level."

Well, on Saturday, the former world number one gave a first glimpse of how his physical status quo is: Federer published a video on Instagram that shows the Swiss hitting some forehands. The hitting arm of the 20-time major winner is already running pretty smoothly again, but this short clip hardly allows a remote diagnosis with regard to the footwork.

Roger Federer returned to the ATP tour in 2021 after a long injury break, but had to undergo another knee operation after the quarter-finals in Wimbledon against Hubert Hurkacz. Since then, the former world number one has not played a match. A return of the Swiss seems likely for the middle to the end of the year, for the Laver Cup at the end of September the 40-year-old has already announced his start.
