Daniil Medvedev could return to the top of the world rankings in two weeks

Daniil Medvedev was at the top of the world rankings for just three weeks before being replaced by Novak Djokovic on Monday. In addition to the 250 points lost from last year's triumph in Marseille, this was due to the 26-year-old's poor performance at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, where he was defeated by Gael Monfils in round three.

Although Novak Djokovic did not even compete in the Californian desert due to a lack of corona vaccination, the Serb is now leading the charts again. But since the 20-time Grand Slam winner will not start in Miami either, Medvedev could be the world number one again after the tournament in Florida.

For that, the Russian would have to reach the semi-finals, since he would then improve by at least 180 points compared to last year (quarter-finals). Medvedev is currently 55 points behind Djokovic. The US Open champion is confident that he can change that at the second ATP Masters 1000 event of the year. "I usually feel a little bit better in Miami in terms of my game," Medvedev said after the early exit at Indian Wells.

Should Medvedev not regain world number one in Miami, there would probably also be some opportunities in the clay court season. Last year he only collected 460 points on ashes - and thus significantly less than Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Alexander Zverev.
