Karolina Pliskova, former number 1 and US Open finalist 2016, is in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time. The Czech beat Berlin winner Liudmila Samsonova 6: 2 and 6: 3.

Despite three tournament victories on grass, Pliskova had never reached the round of eight on Church Road, and after her manageable year 2021, that was not necessarily to be expected. But now the 29-year-old is right there, without losing a set. Pliskova was behind with a break early on, but after the 1: 2 the number of mistakes of her opponent continued to increase, while Pliskova surprisingly turned out to be the more patient.

Ashleigh Barty takes Krejcikova out

World number one Ashleigh Barty is also in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time. The junior female winner from 2011, who had to fight her way through in the first week, won against the reigning French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova 7: 5 and 6: 3, even if she had to make up a 2-4 deficit in the first round.

Previously, Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka had already reached the quarter-finals.

Afterwards at the start: Angelique Kerber, who meets Cori Gauff ( here in the live ticker).
