Sam Querrey is a kind person. He communicates this in two ways: First, he has a slightly more pronounced lower jaw than most people, who always puts a slight smile on his face. On the other hand, he makes a big fuss about himself. When Querrey walked across the training facility on Sunday, he did so deliberately, greeted a few colleagues warmly and seemed to be completely at ease.

Querrey has a sense of humor, as you know from other sources , but he rarely shows it on the court. Querrey plays humorless tennis - and Dominic Thiem should know that this Tuesday.

Thiem's task was actually clear, because he had to do two things above all: protect his own serves against the often risky return games Querreys and somehow get into the ball changes when the American serves. And take advantage of being a stronger baseline player without making unnecessary mistakes

Querrey only fails once on the first serve

At the beginning, Thiem did all of this properly. The 25-year-old varied well on the return, mostly taking the second serve on the baseline and mostly making the points. He scored three breakpoints in round one, but was always unsuccessful. The problem: Querrey's first serve, with which he made 22 out of 22 points into the tie-break. The first point win for Thiem after the first service: 5: 3 in the quick decision when Querrey narrowly pulled a forehand. The Austrian then served for 7: 4.

Thiem does not use two set balls - Querrey manages the turn

In set two Thiem had to do a little more in his service games, twice went over to debut without Querrey coming to a breakball. Thiem, however, had two chances at 5: 4, which then also meant set ball, but never went out. In the tie-break, Querrey then used a too passive Thiems action with a nice network action, after which he passed Thiem for the decisive double-mini-break.

The set win was not undeserved: Thiem had a total of 30 winners and only 11 mistakes without need - Querrey had his balance with 19 winners and only 9 unintentional mistakes in set two, in contrast to round one (14:15) significantly polished.

In set three it was Thiem again who had the chance to break but failed on the return. In return, Querrey did better: Three mistakes without need from Thiem, followed by a backhand on the prairie to 5: 3 for the 31-year-old, and the bitter record for Thiem: No break despite six opportunities. Shortly thereafter, sentence three was history.

Thiem was now clearly stricken - and Querrey was looking for an early knock-out. He broke the light words right at the start of the fourth sentence, afterwards, Thiem did not make a point at the 3: 0 break for the American. Querrey now played almost flawless tennis and allowed Thiem only five points in the fourth set.

In the end, 52 winners were on paper for the semi-finalists from 2017, and he had also turned his odds on the second serve into positive with 56 percent point wins.

The Austrian hopes lie on Dennis Novak, who will contest his opening match against Marton Fucsovics in the evening. For Thiem, Wimbledon 2019 is already over after round one.
