The thing with the mascot - well, Simona Halep skipped it very elegantly. She had just been asked if the Dutchess of Cambridge, formerly Kate Middleton, was her lucky mascot - after Halep mentioned a few days ago that she would be happy to see Her Royal Highness watch today.
Halep smiled and replied, as Wimbledon said: "It was an honor to play in front of her. I was also lucky enough to meet her after the match. She is very, very nice."
Test passed - membership confirmed, one can only say. Because Halep, thanks to the victory in Wimbledon, has achieved her great goal: she is now a member of the All England Club. And that, she assured her, pointing to her purple member button, feels damn good. "I really wanted that. When the tournament started, I told the people in the locker room that it was my dream to become a member. Now it has come true and I am totally happy."

Halep: "Not Thinking About The Score"
Halep has truly earned this membership. It was an impeccable performance in the 6-2, 6-2 win over Serena Williams . Only three unforced mistakes in the entire match speak the clearest language, but do not do justice to the courageous appearance of the Romanian. Halep put pressure on Williams from the start, with long returns and aggressive tennis. She let Williams run, and when she had to run herself, she managed time and time again to maneuver directly from a defensive position into the offensive without going over and going neutral .
"She brought back so many balls! I have a strategy against players who can, but I thought about it too late," said Williams. "I struck too wildly, took too much risk," she knew - but that was ultimately also due to this outstanding Simona Halep.
In the meantime, she had to make sure that she was really winning. "I looked at the scoreboard and noticed: Okay, it's really 5-2, that's real. Then I focused on every rally and didn't think about the game anymore," she announced one of the secrets of the really big ones.
Federer helps victory
She had also received marksman support for victory from Roger Federer - at least indirectly. The Swiss had been asked the day before what advice he would give Halep before the final. "Try to win it," Federer had simply answered, but unraveled this seemingly banal advice. "You have to have the winning mentality. Not only be happy to be in the final. You don't stand a chance against Serena, then you lose," he said. You have to internalize yourself, to be right in the endgame, to have earned it, to play great. "Full concentration, you can't make the moment too big."
Halep couldn't have memorized these words better. "I read what he said and thank you," she said. Federer's words would have made them happy. "I believed that if I listen to what he said, there would be a chance."
