Dominic Thiem is confronted with powerful competition in Rio de Janeiro

In view of the sobering start to the season, Dominic Thiem will probably give very little thought to the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro these days. Now the focus of the Lower Austrian is undoubtedly on traveling to the Australian Open in Melbourne with the self-confidence of one or the other match success. Because there it is for Thiem about the first victory in a Grand Slam tournament since the Australian Open 2021.

After the Australian Open, Dominic Thiem is before the South American sand court swing, which the Lower Austrian will celebrate with the events in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro & Co. The biggest event on paper is the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, where Thiem last failed in the quarterfinals in 2020. After a two-year absence, the 29-year-old returns to Brazil for the 2023 season.

Alcaraz, Ruud & Thiem in Rio de Janeiro

Thiem will face powerful competition there. As of now, Carlos Alcaraz and Caper Ruud, two of the top 3 players in the world rankings, are at the start in Rio de Janeiro, and Lorenzo Musetti and Diego Schwartzman have also already announced that they will be playing in Brazil. At least that's what the organizers say on the official tournament website.

The ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro will take place from February 20th to 26th, 2023. The defending champion is none other than Carlos Alcaraz, who surprisingly triumphed in Brazil last year and is already number one in the represents world. Incidentally, Dominic Thiem was also allowed to raise the trophy to the sky in Rio de Janeiro: In 2017 the Austrian triumphed at the ATP 500 event.
