Worried about Australian Open: Angelique Kerber gives up injured in Adelaide

Angelique Kerber (31) faces injury concerns five days before the Australian Open begins. The German number one had to give up their second round game at the WTA tournament in Adelaide against the Ukrainian Dajana Jastremska at a score of 3: 6, 0: 2.

Kerber had previously been treated by a physiotherapist on the lower back.

The three-time major winner Kerber saw the tournament in Adelaide as the last preparation for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Melbourne from January 20.

The former world number one, who has been working with coach Dieter Kindlmann since this season, has only won one match this year. At the tournament in Brisbane, Kerber had already failed at the start hurdle.

Later on Wednesday, Julia Görges, another DTB player, is in action in Adelaide. Number 38 in the WTA rankings meets top 10 player Belinda Bencic in the round of 16.
