Barty will be number one in Melbourne's first Grand Slam tournament of the year starting next Monday. And after the early resignation against Jennifer Brady in Brisbane, I really needed a sense of achievement. The Australian defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 4: 6, 6: 3 and 7: 5 after a playing time of 2:09 hours. Barty is now the first player in the quarter-finals.

Julia Görges was also able to successfully organize her start in Adelaide. The German number two had some problems with the Australian wildcard holder Priscilla Hon in the first set, but finally prevailed with 7: 6 (7) and 6: 3. In round two, Görges plays against Belinda Bencic from Switzerland, who had already won against Daria Kasatkina on Monday.

The 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens is still looking for the form of earlier days. The US American beat the qualifier Arina Rodionova 2: 6 and 2: 6 silently and without sound. Marketa Vondrousova, last year in the final of the French Open, won against Tatjana Maria.
