Kontaveit had already shown in round one that she had traveled to Doha in top form: The Estonian beat Jennifer Brady in two sets. Brady had previously reached the final at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Kerber, in turn, defeated Turkish Cagla Buyukakcay 6: 4 and 6: 2 in Doha.

The game between Kerber and Kontaveit lasted only 56 minutes. The German was only able to work out a break ball, which she used at least at the beginning of the second set. Kontaveit on the other hand took her opponent's serve four times.

Kontaveit will meet either Petra Kvitova or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarter-finals. The tournament favorite started with Elina Svitolina, who will play her first match against Misaki Doi on Wednesday.
