It was the first match for Barty in the world as the number one in front of a home crowd, while Brady had her first win against a top ten player.

"She plays exceptional tennis, you can't deny that. She played a great match and deservedly won," said Barty, praising her opponent.

Brady had already eliminated Russian Maria Sharapova in the first round of the $ 1.5 million event. "I'm very happy. Ash is a great person. It's a bit surreal. I'm completely thrilled and even shiver a little." Brady meets Czech Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals, who left Liudmila Samsonova only five games.

Naomi Osaka celebrates 13th WTA win in a row

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has successfully continued her triumphal march on the WTA tour. In the second match with her new coach Wim Fissette she made up a set deficit against Sofia Kenin and won 6: 7 (3), 6: 3, 6: 1.

The Japanese celebrated her 13th consecutive match success in series and set a new personal record. The last defeat caused her Belinda Bencic in the round of 16 of the US Open. Since then she has won the tournament in Osaka and Beijing. At the WTA Finals last season, she withdrew after a three-set win against Petra Kvitova. At the start in Brisbane, Osaka also beat Maria Sakkari in three sets.

Karolina Pliskova prevailed in the early afternoon after two tight sets with 6: 4, 6: 7 (5), 6: 1 against Ajl a Tomljanovic.
