Iga Swiatek already had to give up in Cincinnati

Iga Swiatek hasn't really wanted to get going since the end of her seemingly endless winning streak in early summer of the year: The Pole also suffered an early defeat at the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati. Already in Toronto, the world number one failed surprisingly early on due to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

In Cincinnati, Swiatek now had to bow to a local hero: Madison Keys put in a strong performance and quickly won the first round 6:3. And also got off to a perfect start in the second heat. The American managed an early break, which Keys was able to take to a 3-0 lead. For Swiatek it was rock hard, Keys played himself into a frenzy and almost gave the world number one the maximum penalty in set two.

Kontaveit out too

When the score was 5-0, Keys already had two match points for himself, but Swiatek didn't want to give up that quickly. The Pole fights bravely, came back to make it 4:5, but then had to accept the break after almost exactly one and a half hours and thus the 3:6 and 4:6 defeat.

For Anett Kontaveit, it was the next setback in the round of 16: The Estonian had to admit defeat to the Chinese Shuai Zhang after a strong opening set 6:2, 4:6 and 4:6. In set three Kontaveit was still leading 4:2, but had to give up the last four games of the match. Zhang is now waiting for the winner of the duel between Aryna Sabalenka and Shelby Rogers in the round of eight

Kvitova and Rybakina win

Petra Kvitova and Elena Rybakina are also in the quarterfinals. The former played two outstanding sets against Ons Jabeur, only had to accept the 4:6 set equalization in the meantime. Otherwise, Kvitova would have given the tournament number five just one game win at all. Kvitova is waiting for the winner of the duel between Alja Tomljanovic and Veronika Kudermetova.

Elena Rybakina, this year's Wimbledon winner, didn't have to be asked twice against Alison Riske: The Kazakh showed a convincing performance over long stretches and won 6: 2 and 6: 4. Rybakina now meets Swiatek conqueror Madison Keys.
