The former world number one beat compatriot Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6: 3, 6: 2 and is thus in the quarterfinals. Ruse had surprisingly won in her opening match against Paula Basoda, who was third seeded.
Halep, listed outside of the top 20 due to her long injury layoff in 2021, is a two-time champion in Dubai.
Petra Kvitova shocks Sabalenka
Petra Kvitova had previously provided another surprise victory. The two-time Wimbledon winner, currently only listed in 25th place, beat the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka 6: 4, 6: 4 and finally celebrated a sense of achievement again. Kvitova had started the new year with a stutter and had only won two of her five matches up to this week. In Dubai she had won against Camila Giorgi at the start.
Sabalenka suffered the same fate as Garbine Muguruza, Iga Swiatek, Barbora Krajcikova and Elina Svitolina, who all lost today .
